First of all,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Now...
Because you've either figured it out already or are, (like I would be!) wondering what V.O.T.Y. stands for, it stands for Verse Of The Year. Last year I thought about having a verse for the year, but never got around to it. Actually, I wasn't planning on it this year, but I did 'get around to it!'
Here's how it happened.
We were driving home from a trip to attend a wedding + New Years Party when I suddenly realized I hadn't read the Bible that morning!! I was in the middle of Psalm 119 when I ended the day before so I flipped back to there. I tried, as usual, not to skim over the verses, but my head was full of exciting things that had happened the 'year' before (a.k.a. a couple hours before!) so it was difficult. I was about to move on to verse 137 when I noticed that I was skimming again. I went back and read the previous few verses carefully. When I got to verse 136, I stopped and dropped my jaw. WHAT?!
Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because men do not keep Your law. ~ Psalm 119:136
Rivers of water?? That means lots of tears! I thought in childish simplicity. Because men do not keep Your law?? I wouldn't cry that much over men not keeping Your law!
Ooh. Confession time! Yikes was I convicted as that thought ran through my head.
Before I move on, I'm going to ask you a really hard question.
Is sin 'fun' to you or is it an 'abomination'?
Hopefully it's not fun to you. But is it an abomination to you? It certainly is to the Lord! I did a quick search on www.blueletterbible.com and here's the definition for 'abomination.'
//abomination//
Something disgusting (morally), i.e. an abhorrence; especially idolatry or (concretely) an idol
Sin is DISGUSTING to the Lord!
So I looked up the definition for disgusting.
//disgusting//
To excite nausea or loathing in; sicken.
To offend the taste or moral sense of; repel.
Profound aversion or repugnance excited by something offensive.
Do we experience these symptoms when we encounter sin? Ouch. I'm not the one to raise my hand!
I sat there with that thought running through my head. I don't hate sin. GOD hates sin! This isn't right!
I quickly searched the words 'hate' 'abomination' + 'abhor' on www.biblegateway.com
Over and over again I saw that God hates, abhors, and is disgusted at sin.
I want MY sin to be disgusting to me because it is to the Lord.
Father, please drill deep into me the abhorrence you feel at sin. Let my sin be an abomination to me. Alert my eyes to pick out and run the other direction from sin. In Jesus' Name, amen!
What about you? Do you have a V.O.T.Y.? Please share below!! :D
