A Little Brother Follows Me

It was a hot Monday afternoon, and I was sitting in a chair watching my brother practice for his driving test. My job was to set up the cones if he knocked one over, and to watch my little siblings who were riding their bikes behind me. I got up to set up a cone. My little sister also got up, and began to scoop up some rocks from our driveway. I watched as she lined up the rocks on our patio to use instead of cones, and drive through them on her tricycle. It reminded me of the poem, “A Little Brother Follows Me.”

A Little Brother Follows Me

A careful boy I want to be; a little brother follows me. I do not dare to go astray for fear he’ll go the self-same way. I cannot once escape his eyes; whatever he sees me do, he tries. Like me, he says he’s going to be —— that little brother following me. He thinks that I am good and fine; believes in every word of mine. The bad in me he must not see, that little brother following me. I must remember as I go through summer’s sun and winter’s snow I’m building for the years to be that little brother following me.

This poem reminded me of how important it is to set a good example for my siblings - especially my little siblings. They look up to me as a role model! Wow, that's a scary thought. Mama used to always say to me when we were out and about,

"When you cross the street, look to the left, look to the right, and look behind you to see if your siblings are following." Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. ~ Proverbs 20:11

Nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; ~ 1 Peter 5:3
